Garden Description:

‘Green Living’ has been designed as an adult space for sitting, working, dining, reading and artistic uses. The garden is an attractive and modern area, possibly meant for younger occupiers. Urban gardens are generally quite grey and sometimes noisy, but green/living walls can assist in softening the din created by city traffic, and add interest to the grey city walls.

The garden is to be an area that is pleasing to the eye and an escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. But the garden is not a place just to relax, it is a place to utilise and enjoy. The water that surrounds the paving contains planting but also six jets that shoot a beam of bubbling water 1.5m vertically up through the plants. This will create a more pleasurable noise than that of passing traffic, but also will add interest to the area and enhance the water feature.

The main structure within the garden is a living roof that is supported by a teak framework, with two vertical beams at the front (and supported by the wall at the back) with a wooden panel affect that is mounted on the back wall and allows the planting of the living wall to grow randomly around the edges. Plants will be tightly packed into the secure wall panels that will blend into the background and be disguised by the overhanging plants. This garden will not be ideal for wet weather, due to the open sides of the seating area which have been chosen for viewing purposes (and could be adapted when rebuilt after the show).

The islands will be emerging out of the water and these will be supported by a solid block foundation and plinths to lift the occupier over the surface of the water. The surrounding walls are a feature in themselves , as they are living walls. The plot surroundings are assumed to be ugly concrete walls and buildings. The planting that will be growing vertically on the walls, will create an attractive backdrop to the space, soften any city traffic noise and also allow more planting space for plant lovers in such a small enclosed environment.

The walls are a major feature within this design and are giving the occupier a huge amount of space for additional planting within this small plot. Living walls are becoming very popular and allow you create a more alluring exterior to a plain surface. This style of planting is mimicked slightly on the roof of the structure, as it too will be a living surface. The water is meant to transport the occupier, as instantly you are stepping out of the building and onto a stepping stone above the water. You are literally sitting on an island within the plot listening to natures very own sound track of moving water. The islands progressively increase as you reach the centre of the plot.
